The Tongariro Crossing in Winter

The Tongariro Alpine Crossing from May to October: an expert route under snow and ice, the gear DOC lists as essential, why the shuttles stop, and the guided winter crossing.

Updated November 2026

From May to October the Tongariro Alpine Crossing is a different walk: the Department of Conservation (DOC) classes it as an expert route, with snow and ice on the track, avalanche risk and sub-zero temperatures, and says “it’s best to go with a guide”. The shuttles generally stop, while guided trips carry on with their own transport. Adrift Tongariro’s Tongariro Alpine Crossing: Premium Guided Hike runs in winter with crampons and ice axes supplied and taught on the day, from US$254 a person (checked November 2026).

DOC expects ice on the track from April to October, and the Northern Circuit page says avalanches are most common from July to October. In winter there are between 9 and 11 hours of daylight, so a 9-hour walk leaves little margin: take a head torch whatever the plan.

The winter route is the same line, from the Mangatepopo Car Park over Red Crater (1886 m) to the Ketetahi car park.

What DOC lists as essential

A helmet, crampons and an ice axe, and the competence to use them; an avalanche transceiver, probe and snow shovel, and the competence to use them too; waterproof jacket and trousers, a hat, gloves, warm layers and sturdy boots; a mobile phone, a personal locator beacon, a map and compass or GPS; water, food and toilet paper. Most visitors own none of the alpine items, which is the practical reason the guide matters.

What the guided winter day looks like

Adrift’s guided crossing starts at its base, 53 Carroll Street in National Park Village, where the group is fitted out; the listing includes up to NZ$60 of clothing and footwear hire and, in winter conditions, crampons and ice axes, with the training given on the day. No alpine experience is needed, though reasonable fitness is. The van takes about 25 minutes to the start and collects the group at the end. The guide sets the route for avalanche, ice and weather risk, and reaching the Ketetahi end is not guaranteed. For winter Adrift asks for 1 to 2 litres of water, three warm top layers, thermal and over-trousers, a warm hat and gloves.

The shoulder months

October and May sit between the seasons. Ruapehu Scenic Shuttles’ park and ride warns that from June to October walkers may be required to carry alpine equipment and asks to be contacted before booking; Tongariro Expeditions runs its off-peak service in early October and May, when there is no 4-hour parking limit and walkers park in the DOC car park at Ketetahi. The 6 am advisory starts again at Labour weekend.
