A Half-Day Walk on the Tongariro Crossing
The short version of the Tongariro Alpine Crossing: the guided half-day walk to Soda Springs, the Soda Springs walk on your own, the parking limit, and walks for families.
The short version of the Tongariro Alpine Crossing is the first stretch: up the Mangatepopo Valley to Soda Springs and back, which the Department of Conservation (DOC) runs as the Soda Springs walk on the crossing’s first 5.4 km. With a guide it is Adrift Tongariro’s Tongariro Alpine Half Day Guided Group Walk, about 4 hours from National Park Village with 3 of them on the track, from US$197 a person (checked November 2026), and it needs only a low level of fitness.
The calendar above is the half-day guided walk, with 26 reviews (checked November 2026).
What the half day covers
The walk starts with a 20-minute safety briefing at Adrift’s base, 53 Carroll Street in National Park Village, then a 25-minute ride to the Mangatepopo Car Park. From there the guide walks the group up the valley, on the crossing’s boardwalk, to the Soda Springs waterfall below Mount Ngauruhoe, where cold springs feed a patch of mountain buttercups and foxgloves and the group stops for morning tea. Along the way the guide covers the eruptions, the geology and the plants. All mountain gear is supplied, including crampons and ice axes in winter, with up to NZ$60 of clothing and footwear hire.
At Soda Springs walkers can turn back, or, when conditions and logistics allow, upgrade to the full crossing and carry on over Red Crater to the Emerald Lakes and the Blue Lake.

On your own
The Soda Springs walk needs no shuttle: drive to the Mangatepopo Car Park and walk back the way you came. From Labour weekend in late October to 30 April DOC limits parking there to 4 hours, first come, first served, with no booking; the walk to the springs and back fits that window for most walkers, the full crossing does not. Carry water, as none on the track is drinkable, and a warm layer: the valley is open to the wind.
With children
DOC does not recommend the full crossing for children under 10, and Adrift’s guided crossing takes no one under 12. The half-day walk lists no minimum age and suits families who walk regularly. On a day the weather rules out the high ground, DOC’s alternatives are the Taranaki Falls Walking Track and the Tama Lakes Track from Whakapapa Village.
