Tongariro Alpine Crossing Shuttles

Tongariro Alpine Crossing shuttles compared: park at Ketetahi and ride to the start, or a round trip from National Park Village, Tūrangi, Taupō or Ohakune, with road distances.

Updated November 2026

The Tongariro Alpine Crossing is one way, 20.2 km from Mangatepopo to Ketetahi Road, and from late October to April the Department of Conservation (DOC) allows no parking at Mangatepopo for walkers doing it. So walking it without a guide usually means a shuttle. The simplest kind is a park and ride such as Owhango Adventures’ Tongariro Alpine Crossing Shuttle – Park & Ride Ketetahi, from US$36 in current promotion (usually US$42) a person (checked November 2026): you park at the Ketetahi end, ride to the start and walk back to your car.

Why a shuttle

DOC’s rule from Labour weekend in late October to 30 April is a 4-hour maximum at the road ends, and it says outright that there is no parking at Mangatepopo for visitors doing the crossing. Public parking at the Ketetahi end is very limited, and DOC advises against leaving a car on the side of a state highway. Its own line: “The best way to get to the Tongariro Alpine Crossing is by shuttle.” DOC’s free track booking is needed to ride a shuttle; the operators send the link with the confirmation.

Two kinds of shuttle

Park and ride. You drive to a car park near the Ketetahi end in the morning, a shuttle takes you about 30 minutes to Mangatepopo, and you walk the crossing back to the car. No return bus, no time limit at the end. This suits anyone with a rental car.

Round trip. A shuttle collects you in a village (National Park Village, Tūrangi, Taupō or Ohakune), drops you at Mangatepopo and picks you up at Ketetahi in the afternoon. The operators run several return times; slower walkers take the earliest shuttle out and the latest back. This suits anyone without a car.

Prices, ratings and review counts from the listings (GetYourGuide checked November 2026). Operators price by date and season, so treat the figures as the shape of the market, not a quote.

When the shuttles stop

DOC says shuttle buses generally do not operate in winter, roughly May to October, when the crossing becomes an expert route; guided trips include their own transport then. In summer the operators check the forecast and move or refund a booking when the weather stops the crossing. If you want the decision on the mountain made for you, the guided crossing costs more and includes the van at both ends.
