Ketetahi Car Park
Where the Ketetahi car park is, the 4-hour parking limit at the Tongariro Crossing road ends, why there is no summer parking at Mangatepopo, and how the park and ride works.
The Ketetahi car park is the road end where the Tongariro Alpine Crossing finishes, at 760 m on Ketetahi Road off State Highway 46. From Labour weekend in late October to 30 April the Department of Conservation (DOC) limits parking at the crossing’s road ends to 4 hours, and public parking at Ketetahi is very limited, so walkers with a car use a park and ride such as Ruapehu Scenic Shuttles’ Tongariro Alpine Crossing Shuttle : Park at Ketetahi, from US$38 in current promotion (usually US$42) a person (checked November 2026).
The calendar above is the Ruapehu Scenic Shuttles park and ride, with 658 reviews (checked November 2026).
Where the Ketetahi car park is
The crossing comes down out of the forest on the northern slopes and ends at Ketetahi Road, which runs up from State Highway 46 between Lake Rotoaira and the mountain. The road end is at about 39.0738° S, 175.6636° E, in Tongariro National Park. By road it is 26.0 km from the Mangatepopo Car Park, where the crossing starts, and 24.8 km from central Tūrangi.

The parking rules
| Where | Labour weekend (late October) to 30 April | May to October |
|---|---|---|
| Mangatepopo Car Park (start) | 4 hours at most; no parking for visitors doing the full crossing | No 4-hour limit stated |
| Ketetahi road end (finish) | 4 hours at most; very limited public parking | No 4-hour limit stated |
| State highway verges | DOC advises against parking there | DOC advises against parking there |
DOC’s wording on the track page: “Parking restrictions (4 hr maximum) are in place at the road-ends - we suggest you book a shuttle.” The Mangatepopo spaces are first come, first served and cannot be booked; they serve shorter walks such as the one to Soda Springs. A full crossing does not fit inside four hours: DOC gives it 7 to 8 hours in summer.

How the park and ride works
The shuttle companies run private car parks near the Ketetahi end. You arrive early, leave the car there, and a shuttle takes you about 30 minutes round to Mangatepopo; you then walk the crossing back to your own car, with no return bus and no time limit at the finish. Three listings work this way:
- Ruapehu Scenic Shuttles (the calendar above): park at Ketetahi, all-day parking with no time limit included, a DOC levy of NZ$21.08 in the price, final confirmation the evening before.
- Owhango Adventures (*Tongariro Alpine Crossing Shuttle – Park & Ride Ketetahi*, from US$36 in current promotion (usually US$42)): the pickup is on Ketetahi Road, with free all-day roadside parking; arrive 10 to 15 minutes before departure.
- Tongariro Expeditions (*Tongariro Alpine Crossing with Shuttle Transfers*, from US$42): in the peak season its park and ride is off State Highway 46 near the end of the crossing, with a free shuttle between 1 and 5 pm back to your car; outside it, walkers park in the DOC car park at Ketetahi. Other car parks sit nearby, so follow the operator’s own map pin.
All of them need DOC’s free track booking before the day.

Without a car
If you are staying in National Park Village, Whakapapa Village, Tūrangi or Taupō, a round-trip shuttle collects you there instead: the shuttles list them with road distances. The guided crossing from National Park Village runs its own van to Mangatepopo and back from Ketetahi, so the parking rules never touch it: see the guided Tongariro crossing tour.
