How a Tongariro Crossing Tour Works
What the guided day includes, when a shuttle is enough, why nobody parks at Mangatepopo in summer, how long the walk takes, and what was open when this page was checked.
A Tongariro crossing tour is one of two things: a guide who walks the 20.2 km of the Tongariro Alpine Crossing with you, or a shuttle that gets you to the start and back from the finish. The guided version best known online is Adrift Tongariro’s Tongariro Alpine Crossing: Premium Guided Hike, about 9 hours from its base in National Park Village to the Ketetahi car park, from US$254 a person (checked November 2026), with clothing and footwear hire included.
The short answer
From late October to April most walkers do the crossing themselves and pay a shuttle; from May to October the Department of Conservation (DOC) calls it an expert route and says it is best done with a guide. The guide earns its price in three cases: your first alpine walk, any winter date, and a day when you want someone else to decide whether Red Crater is safe to cross. Adrift’s listing has 236 reviews (checked November 2026), takes no one under 12, and says plainly that reaching the Ketetahi end is not guaranteed: the guide picks the route for the weather on the day.

The route

DOC gives the crossing as 20.2 km one way, from the Mangatepopo Car Park at 1120 m to Ketetahi Road at 760 m, and 7 to 8 hours from November to April. The first 5.4 km run up the Mangatepopo Valley on a boardwalk, shared with the Soda Springs walk; then a staircase climbs about 350 m to South Crater, the track rises again to Red Crater, the high point at 1886 m, and drops on loose scree to the Emerald Lakes. After the Blue Lake comes the long descent of the northern slopes, with Lake Rotoaira and Lake Taupō below, into forest and out at Ketetahi. DOC puts toilets every one to two hours along the track and no drinkable water: carry 2 to 3 litres. How long the crossing takes has the section times and the fitness question.
At the Ketetahi car park
Every crossing ends at the Ketetahi car park, the road end on Ketetahi Road off State Highway 46, and most self-guided walkers start their day there too. DOC says public parking at Ketetahi is very limited, and from Labour weekend in late October to 30 April it caps parking at the road ends at 4 hours, with no parking at Mangatepopo for anyone doing the full crossing. That rule is why the park-and-ride shuttles exist: you leave the car at a private car park near the Ketetahi end, ride 26.0 km by road to Mangatepopo, and walk back to it. Adrift’s guided day uses its own van at both ends, so the parking rule does not touch it. The Ketetahi car park covers the parking in detail, and the shuttles compare every way to the start.

What the guided day costs, and what it buys
The guided crossing costs several times a shuttle seat: from US$254 a person against US$36 in current promotion (usually US$42) for the Ketetahi park and ride (checked November 2026). The difference buys the guide, transport at both ends, up to NZ$60 of clothing and footwear hire (boots, layers, a rain shell) and, from May to October, crampons and an ice axe with the lesson to use them. It does not buy lunch: bring your own, with the water. Adrift also runs return transfers from Taupō, Tūrangi and Whakapapa Village to its base for a surcharge, with two people at least.
On a clear summer day a fit walker with the right clothes gets the same views from a shuttle seat. On a doubtful day, or in winter, the guide’s call on the route is the product.
Open, closed and the volcanoes
When this page was checked in November 2026 the crossing was open. DOC’s only notice on the track was maintenance: contractors working on some days, with helicopter flights and minor delays. The track was closed by a fire that started on 8 November 2025 and burned about 2,935 ha of the national park; it reopened on 17 November, closed again for a second fire of about 300 ha and reopened on 10 December 2025. A ten-year rāhui by Ngāti Hikairo ki Tongariro covers the burnt ground: stay on the open tracks.
GeoNet had Tongariro and Ngauruhoe at Volcanic Alert Level 0 and Ruapehu, to the south, at Level 1, with tremor rising to moderate levels in its 29 October 2026 bulletin. DOC closes sections of the crossing if the alert level rises at Tongariro or Ngauruhoe, and the whole crossing if unrest centres on Red Crater. In summer it also posts a “Not Recommended Today” advisory at 6 am when the forecast wind, wind chill or rain crosses its limits. Weather and volcanic alerts explains how to read both.
When to go
The summer season runs from Labour weekend in late October to 30 April, and DOC’s Manaaki Rangers greet walkers daily from November to April. From May to October the track is under snow and ice in sections, DOC lists a helmet, crampons, an ice axe and avalanche gear as essential, and the shuttles generally stop, while guided trips carry on with their own transport. The crossing in winter covers that season, and the half-day walk is the answer for anyone who wants the volcanoes without the 20 km.
The crossing runs through mountains sacred to Ngāti Hikairo ki Tongariro of Ngāti Tūwharetoa, in New Zealand’s first national park, a dual World Heritage Area since 1993; DOC asks walkers not to touch or enter any of the lakes. If the trip continues north to the caves, waitomo-glowworm-caves-tour.com covers the Waitomo glowworm caves.
Walk Over Red Crater with Someone Who Knows the Mountain
Book the guided crossing for a settled-looking day, keep a spare day in the plan for the weather, and bring layers: Red Crater is at least 10 °C colder than Taupō on a calm day. Starting from US$254 per person.

Tongariro Crossing Tours: Questions
Guided or shuttle, parking at Ketetahi, how long it takes, the weather and volcanic alerts, winter and booking.
Not from late October to April; yes in winter unless you have alpine skills. In summer most people walk it themselves with a shuttle. The Department of Conservation (DOC) treats it as an expert route from May to October and says 'it's best to go with a guide' then. Adrift Tongariro's guided crossing is from US$254 a person (checked November 2026), with gear hire included. See the crossing in winter.
At the end of Ketetahi Road, off State Highway 46, where the crossing finishes at 760 m. DOC says public parking there is very limited and, from Labour weekend to 30 April, limited to 4 hours at the road ends; private park-and-ride car parks nearby are where the one-way shuttles start. It is 26.0 km by road from the Mangatepopo Car Park and 24.8 km by road from central Tūrangi. This site is an independent guide, not DOC or a car park operator. See the Ketetahi car park.
Not for the full crossing in summer. From Labour weekend in late October to 30 April DOC limits parking at the road ends to 4 hours and says there is no parking at Mangatepopo for visitors doing the crossing. Its advice: 'The best way to get to the Tongariro Alpine Crossing is by shuttle.' See the shuttles.
20.2 km one way, 7 to 8 hours from November to April. DOC allows 9 hours from May to October. It starts at 1120 m at Mangatepopo, climbs to Red Crater at 1886 m and ends at Ketetahi Road at 760 m. See how long it takes.
DOC's booking is free and recommended, and you need one to use a shuttle or a guided walk. There is no cap on numbers and no penalty for arriving without one. The shuttle and guide listings ask you to complete it before the day.
Yes, when checked in November 2026. DOC's only notice on the track was maintenance work with helicopter flights on some days and minor delays. The crossing was closed by fires from 8 November 2025 and reopened on 17 November and again on 10 December 2025. See weather and volcanic alerts.
No entry fee when checked in November 2026. DOC lists the crossing among four places where the government is looking at charging international visitors, but the law is still before Parliament and DOC expects any charge no earlier than summer 2027/28, with no amount decided. Shuttles and guides charge for transport and guiding.
DOC does not recommend it for children under 10. The guided crossing listing takes no one under 12. For a family, Adrift Tongariro's half-day guided walk to Soda Springs asks only a low level of fitness. See the half-day walk.
